Quintin Blood had tapped out to Jason Kaine’s Stranglehold on Victory in his debut match. However, Harper Riley and Jason Kaine had both lost their opportunities to face Connor Jacobs at the next event. It left Valentina Lemay with whoever was next in line in the polls to face Connor Jacobs instead. That person was Quintin Blood. But, he had no idea at this point what type of match he’d be walking into. If it ended up a submissions match, he’d just tapped out in his debut match to Jason Kaine. If it ended up as a ladder match, Connor Jacobs would have the sure advantage. But, there was a chance that it could be a hardcore match where Connor Jacobs might not end up walking out of Victory. Quintin licked his lips at the thought of having no rules in his next match, but he wished that it involved Jason Kaine. Then, there was that chance. It could happen. The fans of EOW could vote on making this match for the EOW Internet Championship. That was the last thing that Quintin Blood thought would happen.
Now, as Quintin sits in a chair at a Chess table. The lights are dim as the bulbs are about to go out. He looks down at the pieces on the Chessboard deep in thought. He looks up at the camera and begins to speak as he looks at something beyond the camera in the distance.
“It’s a game of Human Chess between Valentina Lemay and Ernie Parker. Valentina Lemay has a lot to think about. She believes that by putting Jason Kaine and Harper Riley in a match together that it’s some form of punishment for them. Ernie Parker is using whatever he can to get under her skin. And, from what I see—“
He sighs heavily. His eyes turn slightly as he looks at the camera.
“It’s working.”
Quintin shakes his head to keep the voices in his head at bay, and his brow furrows as he looks back down at the pieces still in the starting position. He uses his left index finger to push a light gray pawn forward.
“Last week’s polls revealed that Harper Riley was supposed to be facing Connor Jacobs at Victory on October 22nd. Ernie’s suspicious contract, whether Harper Riley knew about it or not, cost her that chance. And Jason Kaine’s vocal allegiance with Ernie Parker cost him the same thing. Or, so it seems to the untrained eye.”
Quintin looks up at the camera.
“So as Harper Riley and Jason Kaine are set to square off, Valentina Lemay left herself in a position of circumstance to make a decision. Who should face Connor Jacobs next?”
He gives a sadistic smile, looks down at the board, and lifts one of the knights on the other side of the board. He holds it in front of his eyes and stares at it for a brief moment before placing it in one of the squares on the edge of the board. He looks back at his side of the board and moves another pawn forward before he continues on.
“As Ernie Parker and Valentina Lemay continue on with this little game of Human Chess, they forget a critical aspect to the game. Only one can stand over the ashes and claim victory.”
Quintin reaches across the board and pulls a pawn forward two squares.
“In this game, Ernie Parker and Valentina Lemay are sitting on either side of the table, but the thrill of this game is actually simple. And, even though they may be moving the pieces—“
A bigger smile comes over his face, the light reflecting off his teeth.
“They have placed themselves into the palms of Harper Riley and Jason Kaine’s hands.”
Quintin looks up at the camera. The look in his eyes is as cold as dry ice.
“Valentina Lemay’s decision to try to take Ernie’s pawns off the board in one move left her in a position such as this. She used the poll results and put Connor Jacobs into a much more dangerous predicament. She made it interesting. What type of match will Connor Jacobs face Quintin Blood in? That’s the question that is left to be answered.”
He looks back down at the board. He moves a bishop three squares diagonally and stares at the other pieces across from him.
“It’s a move that seems simple enough. Valentina Lemay and Ernie Parker may pay little attention to the possibilities. But, Valentina and Ernie have limitations. They have to play by the rules.“
He looks up at the camera with a grin on his face. He shakes his head again, still doing the best he can to keep the voices inside his head quiet.
“There’s always someone else looking over their shoulders. Sooner or later, Kathleen Saxon at will have to step in, again. But, by then it will be too late.”
He takes a deep breath and lets it out. His eyes alone look to the camera.
“What Valentina Lemay and Ernie Parker don’t know is that their maneuvers have set a course that even Kathleen Saxon is not prepared for.”
A smile comes over Quintin’s face, not sadistic or mischievous, but pleased with the thought of the chaos that could result from Valentina and Ernie’s game.
“As everyone goes around trying to stick to the rules, there’s someone that looks on that is not bound by them. They’re the type that doesn’t care about the little games between Valentina and Ernie. They don’t care about Kathleen Saxon trying to enforce the rules. They’re the person that walks up to the board and kicks the table over.”
Quintin stands up and does exactly that. The loud crash of the table on the floor is followed by the pieces clattering on the floor. Quintin looks down at the floor standing over the pieces. He bends down to one knee and picks up one of the pieces. He looks at it and looks up to the camera.
“And as Kathleen Saxon will come to swoop in to clean up the mess, it will be hard for her to accept that there’s nothing she can do. She’ll have to allow Valentina and Ernie to start the game over. But by then—“
He stands up showing the white king between his fingers.
“The damage will be done. And she will know that it could have been avoided. She will know that it all started with Valentina Lemay and Ernie Parker. And she will make them pay for their mistakes.”
He looks at the camera, drops the piece on the floor, and waits until the clatter of plastic on concrete floors stops before he continues on.
“What Valentina Lemay doesn’t know is that Jason Kaine is looking at the possibility that I could very well become the EOW Internet Champion. He knows that Valentina Lemay won’t be able to resist putting Jason Kaine and Quintin Blood in another match. She knows that the fans will demand to see it. They will demand it because of the tenacity they saw when Jason Kaine and I met in the ring for the first time. And that—“
He cackles as the aggressive voice in his head awakens and begins to speak through Quintin.
“Is exactly what we want.”
Quintin tries to fight off the aggressive being inside his head, but it’s no use. He is able to control it just enough, but the voice still speaks through him.
“Connor Jacobs is going to become a victim of circumstance. What will it be? Will Connor Jacobs tap out? Will Connor Jacobs watch us climb the ladder? Will he suffer as a result of a hardcore stipulation? Or, will the prize of the EOW Internet Championship be on the line?”
Quintin Blood shakes his head, the aggressive being inside him cackles in delight of Quintin’s own discomfort, as well as the thrill of the possibilities. Quintin eventually gains control once more. This time the aggressive fiend in his mind goes silent. There’s a few seconds of silence as Quintin Blood regains his composure and he looks at the camera as he speaks for himself once again.
“Connor Jacobs is faster than me. He is more agile. If this ends up being a ladder match, it’s quite possible that he could climb to the top and reach high above his head to grasp whatever might be dangling above our heads. With the exception of Drake Hardin, Jack Owyns, and Jason Kaine he’s Victory’s best when it comes to being a technical wrestler.”
He lets out a heavy sigh.
“Connor could use that to his advantage. He knows it. There’s no doubt that he’s smart inside the squared circle. Though he has a slight advantage in that area it is clear that his speed and agility can make that slight advantage bigger than it really is.”
Quintin looks down at the floor at a few of the Chess pieces around his feet. He sweeps them with his left foot as the sound of plastic sliding across the floor can be heard.
“Connor Jacobs may not have qualified for the EOW Ultimate Championship series, but that same night he became the first EOW Internet Champion.”
He looks up at the camera again as he goes on.
“And Connor Jacobs is going into whatever match we walk into knowing that in order to defeat me, he’s going to need to sweep my power from under my feet. He’s going to have to beat me down over and over again to ensure he goes into the last EOW Victory show before Epic with momentum. Connor Jacobs knows well what he has to do. By the time October 22nd rolls around, everyone will know what type of match this will be. As all eyes will be on the Ultimate Championship series and this game between Valentina Lemay and Ernie Parker—“
He gives the camera a smile.
“Connor Jacobs will come to that ring focused on the task at hand, but as time goes by—“
He chuckles a bit.
“He’ll start making mistakes. He’ll try to rile the fans up by showing off. His own pride will get the better of him. Being fast and agile will cease to matter. They will cease to be an advantage and become his worst flaw.”
He looks at something beyond the camera. He groans and puts his hands on his head as he tries to fight the voices in his head from taking control again. He’s able to maintain and looks at the camera once more. He goes back to talking about his match with Connor Jacobs.
“Connor Jacobs, a ladder match doesn’t put you at an advantage. Not when I can rip it from your hands and use it on you. You know well that a man can only take so much until he can’t get back up. The difference between you and I is that it will take a lot more for me to stay down. I can use your body to make ringside look at a warzone. By the time I’m finished, it won’t matter how long it takes me to climb that ladder and take down whatever Valentina Lemay decides to hang above us.”
He lowers his head, still looking at the camera with his eyes.
“What is the benefit of your speed when you won’t even be able to use it anymore? What will it matter when the only awareness you’ll have is when you’re on your back looking up at me standing on top of that ladder and you can’t do anything about it?”
He shakes his head and snickers a bit.
“Of course, this may not end up being a ladder match, Connor. It could be a match where your technical ability will do you justice. But, what you’re looking at is that neither of us have an advantage. You may have the slight advantage when it comes to stamina. You may be a pain to get ahold of. I may have tapped out to Jason Kaine this last week, and you may think that means something. Right?”
He shakes his head.
“Wrong. But, I will tell you this. A submission match is your only chance to wake up the next morning without questioning whether you’ll be able to get up and walk. Why?”
He smiles bigger than he’s smiled before.
“Because you know that I’m the last person you want to step into the ring with if there are no rules. A hardcore stipulation of any kind with me is the same as a death sentence. Even Ernie Parker knows it. And, he was right. If I do get my way, the EOW Internet Champion may not be able to continue.”
He chuckles a bit and through all this it seems as though Quintin really doesn’t have as much control over the voices in his head like he believes.
“You’re career could very well end if the fans vote for a hardcore stipulation, Connor. That’s worse than having to put your EOW Internet Championship on the line isn’t it? Losing your ability to compete again? That fear of not being able to show the people what you’re capable of could become a reality on October 22nd. The fans would remember that was the night that Connor Jacobs’ career came to screeching, horrific halt.”
Quintin feels the pull on his mind again from the voices in his head. This time it appears to be physically painful to him and he drops to his knees holding his head and groaning as he attempts to resist. After a good 30 seconds of this, with his head on the concrete floor, Quintin is somewhat able to calm himself down enough to carry on from where he left off.
“But, that’d be Jason Kaine’s fantasy. An EOW Internet Championship match would play right into Ernie Parker’s hands. He knows that Valentina Lemay would be forced to give the fans what they want to see. And if I were to take the EOW Internet Championship from you, Ernie Parker knows that Jason Kaine could get his EOW Internet Championship after all.”
Quintin Blood begins laughing softly, at first, but then it turns into a bone chilling, evil laugh. Quintin Blood looks up as the aggressor speaks through him.
“But, we’re going to kick the table over on you Ernie and you will know terror like never before.”
He rises to his feet.
“And Jason Kaine will know that his victory over us didn’t matter. He’ll know that if he has to face us for the EOW Internet Championship, the real game master is and will always be us. And Valentina Lemay and Ernie Parker will know where we have them.”
"Checkmate?"
"Yes, checkmate!"
The camera fades leaving Quintin Blood in darkness as the light bulbs finally burn out.
