Six months ago, professional wrestler Tyler Keenan walked away from the wrestling business.
His motivations for the decision are still unclear to this day, with many wrestling tabloids and websites reporting a variety of things, from a promotion going bankrupt under his feet, too much of a busy work schedule or even to focus on the blooming relationship between fellow professional wrestler Evelyn Taylor and himself. Whatever it was, the decision sent the whole wrestling world reeling. For such a promising young talent to make the decision to put his wrestling career on hold and focus on other prospects was something that quite shocking, especially for someone with the hard-working attitude, determination and courage to succeed like Tyler Keenan.
But whatever had forced his career to standstill soon manage to take a deep impact on Keenan, changing him in ways that many had not seen before. Many people noted that the young starlet had become depressed, anti-social and downright venomous in his speech towards reporters when they tried to bring up the subject of wrestling to his face. He had started to become more and more of a public nuisance than he had normally been, not turning up to scheduled interviews and being incredibly rude and vicious to the ones that he did manage to attend.
His appearance also became more ragged and rough, with the former reality star growing a full beard and letting his hair become shaggy, untrimmed and unkept. He looked like a man fighting his own personal battles, one with demons that only he could defeat. Tyler Keenan became a man blocked off from the world around him, doing whatever he could to stay indoors and wallow in the sorrows of his life.
He became different. He changed.
Gone was the Tyler Keenan that was confident, arrogant and held a righteous swagger, the Tyler Keenan that was boo'ed by audiences across the world for two years due to his wealth and his better-than-you persona. No, he was gone, replaced by a man so bitter and vile that they could barely be considered to be the same person anymore. Whatever sour experience that he had at the end of his wrestling career had changed him, and not for the better off.
By the end of it, it was revealed that he had been suffering from a severe alcohol addiction, one that cost him his spot in the limelight and the relationship he had built up with Taylor, with the pair reportedly going their separate ways in June 2016.
Going underground for around three months, Tyler Keenan re-appeared in the public eye for the first time since March 2016 when he appeared on the front cover of a popular magazine in July 2016. It seemed as though the break-up with his girlfriend had stirred something inside of him, the never-say-die spirit that he had worn as a chip on his shoulder since his time in the IWA back in 2015. With trimmed, gelled and perfectly styled hair, a clean shaven face and piercing hazel-coloured eyes, Tyler Keenan looked like the same man that had decided to mark a new chapter in his life.
There were no interviews. He did not speak to tabloids about anything except his current projects. Not one words slipped from the man's mouth about his current relationship status with Taylor, the reason he left wrestling or his struggles with alcohol addiction. The only thing that seemed to be on the mind of Tyler Keenan after his resurgence was his modelling career, something that he was determined to waltz back into.
And waltz back in he did.
Immediately after he publicly announced his intentions to pursue his modelling career, Tyler Keenan was picked up and signed to contracts by some of the most famous household brands. He became a model for numerous companies, modelling clothing to underwear from America to Japan. Reportedly earning a lot more money than he had working independent wrestling shows, Tyler Keenan legitimately seemed happy for the first time in around four months, something that reporters were soon to pick up on. He worked hard to rebuild the life that he had nearly ruined, becoming the Tyler Keenan that first graced the wrestling world back in 2013, when he made his professional wrestler debut and wrestling the first match of his career.
There was a certain swagger behind him, but not the one that he had carried before. It was not a swagger of confidence, but a swagger of happiness. He was actually happy with his life outside of wrestling, voicing multiple times that he had no intentions of returning to the sport which he had left earlier on in the year. He completely turned his life around and re-invented himself, perhaps for better or perhaps for worse.
But in August 2016, rumblings began to spread over the internet that Keenan had been spotted entering a wrestling gym multiple times near his home in Manhattan, New York. He appeared fitter than he before, sporting a more toned and muscular body in modelling photoshoots than he had ever done before. It seemed as though he was preparing for something, although he would not disclose what it was.
Until it was revealed that he signed for Epic Online Wrestling last night, becoming the latest member of Ernie Parker's roster on Livewire.
Presenting himself to the press was not the broken Tyler Keenan, not the model Tyler Keenan, but the Tyler Keenan who had been left behind. The one with the fire in his belly, the passion in his heart, the desire to enter the squared circle and become the best wrestler the world has ever seen.
But the main question is: Has all of the bad experiences left Tyler Keenan a weakened fighter? Is he still the same wrestler he once was?
We'll just have to wait and find out, won't we?
