I’ve made this drive late at night a thousand times in my life. To tell you the truth I’m not even sure I need to keep my eyes open for it, that’s how frequently the tires of my old 1994 Toyota Camry have traveled these roads. The only difference between now and then is that it feels different this time. Why? Because for the first time in my life my name is scrawled in ink on a contract. I’ve never experienced that before. Who would have thought that setting up direct deposit for your bank account could be so exciting? Maybe for the rest of the men and women on the roster that sort of thing won’t be a big deal. For me it’s life changing. See, I’ve been competing in a wrestling ring since I turned fifteen. I love this business. I’ve given my body to this business for eight years and never once has anyone ever handed me a check. It’s usually an envelope stuffed with less money than had been agreed upon over the phone or through text message.
You can’t begin to understand how life changing a moment like this is for me and how great it felt to call my mother and tell her that I had finally made it. It’s the truth. I’ve made it. I frequently take what little extra money I have and spend it on tickets to get into events that are coming through Boston or somewhere close by and what do I see nine times out of ten? I see men and women who have lost their love for the business. I see people who hate what they do but because they don’t know how to do anything else they just keep grinding away. It shouldn’t be like that. I refuse to let it be like that for me. Regardless of what happens in the coming weeks and months, I will not let this business change who I am because I am unique.
Ernie Parker recognized just how unique of a talent I truly am. That’s not tooting my own horn. I wouldn’t do that. I think everyone in this company would agree that there isn’t a single name on the roster who moves with the flawless grace that I do in the wrestling ring. I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that no one can fly like I do. Ernie said it himself, it’s like I’ve got helium in my blood. When you’ve never climbed into a wrestling ring against someone who embraces a particular wrestling style in the way that I do, how can you even begin to prepare for it? I know there will be questions about my strength and my technical wrestling ability. I understand that. Those are the questions that have been following me around since day one. I also understand that people want guarantees. They expect their favorite stars to shout from the mountain tops about how great and undefeatable they are.
I won’t do that. I won’t be that foolish. There are too many variables and too many things that can change in the blink of an eye. A casual wrestling fan doesn’t realize just how narrow the margins of victory and defeat truly are. When things can change as quickly as they do in competitive professional wrestling, who would be better to outlast a collective group of fantastic talent than the fastest man on Livewire? In my opinion the evidence leans towards me. Every one of us is going to want to lay claim to the EOW Heavyweight Championship, and if not that then the Atlantic Championship at the very least. We all have the same drive. We all have the same competitive fire. What is it that will separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak?
Astrologists, astronomers, religious figures and, in all honesty, most people in the world look to the skies for the answers to life’s most difficult questions. On Livewire, I hope you’ll all tune in. When you do, if you look to the skies, I think you’ll find the answers to the questions you’ve been asking.
But just like my trip home to see my mama and papa, there’s a long road to travel before we get to that point.
I can't wait.
Can you?
